While modern workplaces place a stronger emphasis on employee wellbeing and flexibility, work uniforms have undergone a similar transformation. No longer just about adhering to dress codes, today’s uniforms are expected to strike the right balance between style, comfort, and practicality without compromising on professionalism. Whether it’s hospitality, healthcare, retail, or corporate settings, organisations are redefining the purpose of uniforms in everyday operations.

As passionate innovators in the uniform space, the experts at Total Image (Total Image) explore how to design fashionable and functional work uniforms, and how each industry can tailor their choices to reflect their unique needs.

The Importance of Balance

Work uniforms have come a long way from its past of rigid designs. At the forefront of this evolution, Total Image has embraced designs with aesthetics and functionality in mind. This means creating the perfect uniform is more than just stitching a logo onto a fabric. By weaving this balance into your work uniforms, your brand’s cohesive look becomes a powerful tool that uplifts your team’s productivity while reinforcing a statement of brand pride.

Start with Role Requirements

When designing work uniforms, it’s crucial to understand the specific demands of each role. While creating a unified appearance is essential, different teams should be dressed in attire that supports their work and environment. From corporate to logistics, care for your staff and showcase your brand at every step of the way by tailoring work uniforms based on key areas such as staffs’ physical demands, climate, mobility, and safety.

An example of this need for role-specific uniforms is the rise of women’s hi-vis workwear. For years, many women in trade and construction roles were forced to wear men’s uniforms, resulting in oversized, baggy clothing that posed serious safety risks (such as tripping or snagging on equipment) and affected their confidence and ability to perform well (Ayling, 2020). This growing need reinforces that well-designed work uniforms empower every worker, no longer fitting into a one-size-fits all approach.

Additionally, while fabric and garment details may seem minor, they play a crucial role in how your team moves, feels, and performs throughout the day. What transforms a good work uniform into an exceptional one lies in the details that go beyond aesthetics. Thoughtful details like moisture-wicking fabrics, adjustable fits, and job-specific pockets are just some examples of how workwear is balancing practicality with polished style.

Incorporating Fashion-Forward Elements

At Total Image, we understand that what your team wears speaks volumes—it tells your brand’s story, shapes first impressions, and builds experiences. That’s why we approach uniform design through a fashion-forward lens, carefully balancing trend-driven style with brand consistency and wearability. By subtly incorporating versatile colour palettes, smart layering, and modern cuts, work uniforms are able to feel current yet timeless. This means your staff’s attire stand against the test of time, maintaining a sharp and confident look, year after year.

Take a look at some of Total Image’s refreshed uniform ranges that have been elevated with fashion-forward elements:

Harvey Norman

Total Image reimagined the traditional retail uniform for something more dynamic and brand-forward. The aim was to design a work uniform that not only turned heads on the shop floor but also made a bold statement for Harvey Norman as one of Australia’s iconic retailers. With vibrant striped shirts and contrasting knitwear, the uniforms deliver impact, personality, and modern edge to their retail experience.

Fantastic Furniture

Total Image’s 2017 uniform design for Fantastic Furniture was dominated by pink shirting. However, after serving the staff for 6 years, it was time for a uniform refresh, one that was professional, comfortable, and easy to care. Replacing the crisp button-ups, the smart-casual polos are decorated with Fantastic Furniture’s signature watermelon logo and a sleek contrast collar. Available in both short and long-sleeve styles, the new work uniforms offer greater flexibility and mobility, perfectly suited to the demands of their dynamic retail team.

Industry Specific Examples

Uniforms must also be tailored across industries, and through this experience, we’ve identified key uniform considerations that consistently emerge within specific sectors.

Hospitality

Front-of-house staff are the face of your brand, so their uniforms should feel and look good. Meanwhile, back-of-house teams will prioritise gear that can keep up. Think easy-care, hard-wearing garments built to handle the heat, hustle, and intensity of the kitchen.

Healthcare

Our healthcare heroes are always on the move, and they need attire that works as hard as they do. Healthcare uniforms are often enhanced through features like anti-odour and anti-bacterial properties, ensuring that they remain fresh, hygienic, and durable throughout their long shifts.

Retail

From the stockroom to the shop floor, retail teams are always on their feet and handling a variety of customer-focused tasks. This influences how retail uniforms tend to have more trend-conscious designs compared to other industries, as the attire needs to reflect the brand’s personality while creating a cohesive and stylish experience for customers. As a result, modern and approachable work uniforms are essential to meet these demands.

Hi-Vis and Workwear

These uniforms are designed to withstand tough conditions by incorporating UV protection, Hi-Vis safety standards, and reflective strips, ensuring that staff stay visible and protected while prioritising safety in challenging environments.

Inclusivity and Size Range

Offering work uniforms that accommodate all body types, genders, and cultural preferences is key to fostering an inclusive workplace. While unisex fits are becoming more popular, they may not suit every team, which is why some uniform ranges are now offering both unisex and gender-specific options to better meet diverse needs.

Providing a wide size range, alongside thoughtfully designed uniforms, ensures every employee feels comfortable, confident, and respected. Inclusive work uniforms help create a culture of respect and belonging, making them a smart choice for businesses dedicated to diversity and employee well-being.
